Engagement rings are rings that are usually given by males to females to signify that a marriage is planned. Although it is usually the female that receives the engagement ring men can also get them.  It is not known when the giving of engagement rings was started but the practice of doing so has been occurring for quite some time especially in the western world.

It is typical for the one purchasing an engagement ring to spend about 2 month´s salary on the ring signifying the importance of the decision that is being made. Next to a house, car or the actual wedding ring an engagement ring is probably the most expensive purchase someone would make. Because of this, considerable time is used in deciding on which one to buy. Men are usually the ones to purchase them but women have been known to buy them as well.

Engagement rings are usually purchased in jewelry stores. However they can also be found at pawn stores. Others who comfortable making online purchases buy them from stores who have an online presence.

An engagement ring usually consists of a gold band with a precious stone sitting on top although other precious metals can be used for the band. In some countries, such as United States and the United Kingdom, the ring is worn on the left hand ring finger, while in other countries, such as Poland and Ukraine, it is customary for the ring to be worn on the right-hand.

Most engagement rings like any other kind of jewelry can be classified according to their style. Diamonds have been widely featured in engagement rings since the middle of the 20th century. Solitaire rings have one single diamond. Three-stone diamond engagement rings, sometimes called trinity rings or trilogy, are rings with three matching diamonds set horizontally in a row with the bigger stone in the center. The three diamonds on the ring are typically said to represent the couple´s past, present, and future, but some people give religious significance to the arrangement.
