History of the synthetic diamond

   General Interest in synthetically making diamonds (i.e.: producing diamonds in a lab), first began to spread back in 1797, when it was discovered that diamonds are pure carbon, just in the form of a different allotrope, which means the atoms form a variation of the face-centered cubic crystal lattice structure. However, a duplicable method for creating synthetic diamonds in the lab wasn´t discovered for almost another hundred years, except by only a handful of individuals with limited results, which weren´t industrially reproducible.

   Then in the early to mid twentieth century, research teams hired by the General Electric (GE), Norton and Carborundum companies to further develop the creation of synthetic diamonds, learned how to create them through a process called "High Pressure High Temperature" or HPHT. The process is cheap and the machines required are comparatively simple to produce, and the diamonds almost as easy, but for economic reasons, the growth of a synthetic diamond is usually terminated once it reaches a weight of 1-1.5 carats. For those of you who are of a speculative nature, you can see where people get the idea that there´s some kind of "conspiracy" that controls the value of diamonds, especially since the advent of the synthetic diamond in today´s jewelry market.

   Farther along in history, lab researchers developed a second method for creating synthetic diamonds, called Chemical Vapor Deposition or "CVD". As the name suggests, this method involves using hydrocarbon vapor to grow diamonds on substrate materials, in small chambers with pressures of only about 27 kPa. This method doesn´t produce as much bulk diamond as HPHT does, but it has advantages like being able to grow synthetic diamonds over large surfaces and on various types of substrates. These advantages are what helped develop the interest and continued research into this method since the 1980´s. A couple of other methods developed over the last several years, but which still require some refinement, are Ultrasound Cavitation and the detonation of explosives to create nanodiamonds.
